What type of a retaining wall do you need installed? For residential retaining walls in Kansas City, most walls will be less than 4′ tall. Walls less than 4′ tall do not need to have a permit or engineering specs followed. Because of this a majority of walls we see in the Kansas City area are built as gravity walls. Gravity walls are the easiest wall to build, they only use about 12 inches of gravel behind them as a drainage system. This type of retaining wall will last under the correct situations. When all the correct situations are not present, the wall is going to be pushed forward and eventually fail. We will assess your unique situation and suggest if you need a gravity retaining wall or a reinforced retaining wall.
Reinforced Wall
In Kansas City where a majority of the soils have a high clay content, reinforcement becomes necessary on walls less than 4 feet tall. A reinforced wall uses the same system of wall blocks and a gravel drainage system as a gravity wall. A reinforced retaining wall has the added step of installing geogrid a minimum of 4′ behind the face of the wall into the slope. On a typical residential retaining wall this doubles the amount of excavation. When installing the geogrid, the backfill soil has to be compacted back into place. This approach will cost more to install, but will be able to resist the hydrostatic forces pushing against your retaining wall.
